  31. CUT and Sunday 6th June 1999

  34. Some of you may have seen this message (or one like it) in one of the many
  35. other places we announce things, and some of you may get this more than
  36. once. Our apologies in advance if you have.
  37.  
  38. First of all, a belated thank you to many of you for signing 'I agree with
  39. the aims of CUT'. Belated because we don't want to bombard people with
  40. email: this one is important, though, and is going out to a great many
  41. people. 
  42.  
  43. On Sunday 6 June we are taking part in a European Telecommunications
  44. Boycott with nine other European countries. The formal announcement is at:

  48. The aim is for as many people as possible in those countries to pull out
  49. their telephone plugs, and lay down their modems, for 24 hours on that day
  50. in protest at high telecommunications charging in most EU countries, not
  51. just ours. 
  52.  
  53. We're encouraging all telephone users, not just Internet users, to take
  54. part. So, without the telephone bell or the computer to annoy you, you can
  55. spend that Sunday doing all these things you've been putting off. I'll be
  56. reading a couple of books which have lain unopened for months because of
  57. CUT taking up so much time. 
  58.  
  59. You can do several things to help: 
  60.  
  61. 1. Take part and tell all your friends, relatives and Internet contacts
  62. what's going on. 
  63.  
  64. 2. Forward the CUT press release to all the organisations you know of:

  68. information which will let the media know what we're about, plus our
  69. contact details, so don't worry about having to summarise what we do

  73. have one - or, even better, get your company to put the link up in its Web

  83. 5. If you've not done so already, consider becoming a full member of CUT;
  84. have a look at the site again and, if you like what you see, please sign
  85. up. We now take credit card memberships via a secure server.

  87. 6. And when 6th June comes along, take down your own web site altogether
  88. and replace it with only the link to the campaign. Of course, don't forget
  89. to put it back up again at the end of the Boycott! If you don't have a web
  90. site yet, make one especially for the occasion! Your own ISP probably gives
  91. you space as part of your service, and if not, there are plenty of "free"
  92. web prividers around.

  94. There will be lots of things happening between now and then, so please
  95. visit the site from time to time for updates and further news.

  97. 6th June is the anniversary of D-Day. This is *our* D-Day, when we tell the
  98. telcos, the regulators, and all the other cosy partners in the Great Phone
  99. Waltz that enough is enough! We're fighting back and won't give ground any
  100. more!
